The island Langenwerder lies before the northeast coast of the island Poel opposite the small place Gollwitz. It belongs to the Wismarer bay to the Baltic Sea in Mecklenburg. The island has a size of approx. 20 ha, at a length of 990 m and a width between 200 and 450 m. The information vary a little according to water level.

The island Langenwerder was too small and the ground was too bad in order to be able to be used agriculturally. So many lake bird kinds could settle on Langenwerder. In order to protect the birds founded already at the beginning of the 20th century a bird protection association with name "Jordsand". Through the work of the association a regulation which put the entrance from Langenwerder during the breeding time of the lake birds under punishment was issued in the year 1923. In the year 1937 the field of the island of Langenwerder and surrounding water surfaces was put under nature conservation. Through these protective measures a natural paradise could develop on Langenwerder. 10.000 birds ends ponder every year here and not to be useful little Langenwerden as a break place onto their long journey into their summers or winter accommodations. Living on the island: Storm seagulls, black-headed gulls, silver seagulls, coast terns, oystercatchers, mute swans and many other coming and wading bird kinds. Unfortunately the number of the storm seagulls is very great in the colony and other bird kinds are beset by them. Because the storm seagull misappropriates with pleasure at nest of eggs and breeding of other birds. In the winter 1926/1927, it was a warm winter were observed on Langenwerder even of flamingos.
