Poeler cog, Ship, Kogge - Poeler kogge

Always the place Baltic Sea of one was move navigation traffic's. Already in the Stone Age people about the Baltic Sea prepared themselves to explore the way around far banks or to practice the way around a modest trade. This trade developed and reaches one of their big climaxes with the Hanseatic League time. Many thousands of sailing boats, then in the 14th century particularly the cog ship type transported goods into the ports Luebeck, Wismar, life-saving, Riga or Nowgorod. Mostly the cruises proceeded happily and the ships came undamaged in their ports of destination at. But sometimes especially in the fall or winter if the Baltic Sea is lashed by storms, some cog versank in the sea. Those ones are countless wreck's, that lie on the reason of the Baltic Sea. One could map out some thousands until now and only few lift and for the posterity restore.

Cog from the 15th century

In the year Anno 1354 a cog sank before the Poeler west coast near from Timmendorf, presumably fell how many other ships in the Baltic Sea one of these fall storms to the victim that can often reach hurricane strength on open sea. As the crew likes to have fought for ship and their life, however everything the cog did not help versank in the floods of the Baltic Sea.. Long this ship remained missing under a sandbank until fall storms rinsed 1997 and 1998 wreckage onto the beach from Timmendorf. Investigations of the wreckage, particularly parts of the planking that the wood came from the 14th century made. In the year 1999 after an extensive search the ship wreck in zweieinhalb could be discovered meter depth only 150 m of the Timmendorfer beach away of divers. Since the cog lay under a sandbank for centuries, their state was surprisingly good. At the end of 1999 archeologists began with the recovery of the remains of the cog.
After the restoration of the wreckage one could begin onto the reconstruction of the ship. Here at one put firm that the Poeler cog of pine wood in the then usual clinker technique was built. The wood of the cog came from the field of Vistula, the shipyard could not be determined unfortunately. Presumably she was uplifted on a shipyard in the Baltikum, maybe in the old Riga Hanseatic League city. The reconstruction showed a new design of the cog which was until then unknown. Therefore one speaks here also of a "Baltic cog" now to the point of origin of the wood. With a length of 31,5 m and a loading capacity of about 250 tons the Poeler cog was the first find in this size in the field of the Baltic Sea.
Since summer 2000 the supporting-association "Poeler Kogge" builds a ship according to the plans of the Poeler cog. To Whitsun 2004 launch was already and in the summer 2005 the maiden voyage is supposed to find. The whole is financed also through tax money. Whether this is a good thing, I am not able to say, there many wind misery slow rot, one must let the question to be liked whether one builds old ships again or invests the money in the preservation of available old ships. But since it is a question also of tax money here such considerations play presumably a subordinate role.

Positively we would like here though "Poeler Kogge, who makes an effort for donation money for the reproduction of the Poeler cog," mentions the work of the supporting-association.
