The island Poel lies directly in the Baltic Sea between the Wismarer bay and the bay Mecklenburgians. With a size of about thirty-six square kilometers Poel is that one biggest island of Germany. The island is accessible from the mainland about the dam whitebait. The name Poel is carried off from the God of the Germans Phol. Other springs report also about a Slavic origin of the name. The municipality Poel withstands Kaltenhof, Kirchdorf, from the local parts Brandenhusen, ferry boat village, Gollwitz, Malchow, new yard, Niendorf, Oertzenhof, lake village, Timmendorf, Vorwerk, Wangern, and width village.

On the south side of the island Poel, directly near the small bay Kirchsee the small place Kirchdorf lies. Formerly a small fishing village with some agriculture, the tourism determines today the pulse in Kirchdorf.

Already from a distance one sees the yacht harbor neu entstandenen according to the turn. Sails at sail and ship at ship lie here in the protected Kirchsee. Near the west coast of the island Poel the small tourist place Timmendorf lies. Already to DDR times did here many people vacation and enjoyed the marvellous sandy beach of the island Poel.
